Malwatta Chapter

The Malwatta Chapter is one of the two main chapters of the Siyam Nikaya, the most prominent Buddhist monastic order in Sri Lanka, the other being the Asgiriya Chapter. Established in the 18th century, the Malwatta Chapter is based in Kandy, at the historic Malwatta Maha Viharaya, a sacred temple complex that has played a central role in preserving Theravada Buddhism in the country. Its origins are closely tied to efforts to revive higher ordination (Upasampada) in Sri Lanka after the decline of monastic practices during colonial rule.

Over the centuries, the Malwatta Chapter has been influential in both religious and cultural spheres. The Mahanayaka Theras (chief monks) of Malwatta have historically held significant authority in monastic administration and have been key figures in guiding Buddhist education, rituals, and moral leadership. They are also deeply involved in national events, most notably the annual Esala Perahera in Kandy, which blends devotion, cultural expression, and historical tradition, showcasing the chapter’s role in preserving Sri Lankan heritage.

The chapter emphasizes strict adherence to the Vinaya (monastic code) and the study of Buddhist scriptures, encouraging a disciplined lifestyle among monks. Through its network of affiliated temples and educational institutions, the Malwatta Chapter continues to play a crucial role in shaping monastic life, nurturing Buddhist scholarship, and supporting communities across Sri Lanka. Its presence symbolizes continuity of spiritual tradition, scholarly pursuit, and the integration of religion with social and cultural life.
