Lakpura® Sugarcane Plant

Sugarcane (උක්) is a tall, perennial grass widely cultivated in tropical regions, including Sri Lanka, for its juice-rich stalks. Unlike typical fruit-bearing plants, sugarcane doesn’t produce edible fruit; instead, the sweetness lies in its fibrous stem. Rich in natural sugars, it’s used to make jaggery (උක් හකුරු), syrup, and alcoholic beverages like arrack. Farmers propagate sugarcane through stem cuttings, and the plant thrives in warm, moist environments with abundant sunlight.
