Sri Lanka boasts of a variety of distinct musical instruments that have been passed on through the centuries. The Thammattama which is referred to as the pokuru beraya is usually tied around the drummer’s waist and played using two drum sticks that are known as "kadippu". Drumming at religious festivals has been considered as an important element while it also has a special place as a performance art medium. There are many schools in the island that carry out teaching the art playing drums contributing in preserving our culture.
Both sides of the Thammattama should be played simultaneously with the use of the kadippu while both sounds boast of unique tones. Generally, they are not played with equal pressure while there are special rhythms played on this drum. You can order the kadippu as a separate product through Lakpura today and treasure our traditions for the future.
